HARWICH &
PARKESTON 2
ILFORD FC 0
1st September 2007
It was a changed side from midweek that Harwich fielded against Ryman league North outfit, Ilford FC. New signing Tony Chatters, brother of Jimmy, brought into midfield and Calver pushed upfront alongside the returning Underwood. The change reaped reward from the off, Underwood’s perfectly weighted 2nd minute chip found Calver at the back-post to nod into an empty net. In a high tempo half both midfields battled for supremacy and it took a full 25 minutes before Ilford had a shot on goal, Kevin Skinner firing high from 25 yards. It was Harwich however who concluded the half stronger with a thunderous shot from Tony Chatters which had Chris Cooper in the Ilford goal at full stretch.
Ilford started to
threaten the Harwich goal early in the second half, Carl Bailey’s shot flashing
inches past the post and a fine downward header from Ed Chibugo had Wooton
watching as the ball looped over the bar.
As Ilford chased the equaliser holes started to develop in their defence and
this was exploited in the 74th minute by the pace of Jimmy Chatters
chasing down a Robbie May clearance and following a 20 yard run towards goal,
slotted the ball calmly under the advancing Cooper. Harwich had chances to
extend their lead in the remaining minutes, Calver and Chatters going close, but
a 2-0 score-line now means they face Woodford United in the next round in two
weeks time.
