HARWICH &
PARKESTON 0
MILDENHALL 1
13 October 2007
A changed Harwich side started the match against fourth place Mildenhall, new signing Scott Page partnered Lee Underwood upfront and Ugg Palmer making the step up from the reserves came into midfield. Mildenhall started the brighter, Gareth Simpson and Dave Werthman both had early chances to take the lead. Harwich worked hard as the half progressed, Underwood’s pace proving a constant threat to the Mildenhall back four and it was his knock back for Calver on the edge of the area in the 20th minute that brought the first shot on goal that Mildenhall keeper, Ben Nower was equal to.
In contrast to the
first period the second half was played openly and at pace. Clements going a
yard wide with a downward header when unmarked at the back-post but Harwich’s
well organised defence were able to soak up sustained Mildenhall pressure.
Harwich played good counter attacking football, Underwood finding acres of space
behind the back four but was unable to direct his 58th lob on target.
The deadlock looked to have been broken in the 60th minute, Clements
going down in the area under the challenge of Johnson but Simpson was unable to
convert the spot-kick, blasting his shot high over the bar. Mildenhall finally
made their pressure pay in the 72nd minute, Clements latching on to a
curling free-kick beating Wooten at the far post. Despite the final 10 minutes
belonging to Harwich they were unable to unlock the Mildenhall defence, the
score remaining 1-0
